Bing AI vs. ChatGPT: Which One is Better?
ChatGPT and Bing Chat are two of the most popular chatbots currently, and they are both powered by similar large language models (LLM) created by OpenAI. But which one is better for you?
Both ChatGPT and Bing Chat are based on the GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) language model. However, they operate on different versions and have distinct approaches to processing inputs. With the launch of GPT-4, OpenAI introduced a more advanced system that boasts enhancements in security and functionality. Both ChatGPT and Bing Chat utilize the GPT-4 model, which is capable of processing longer text inputs, tackling more complex problems, and demonstrating a wider range of general knowledge and problem-solving abilities. Furthermore, GPT-4 introduces the ability to process images, enabling capabilities such as generating captions, classifications, and analyses.
Each chatbot is tailored to its unique application, featuring variations in input methods, interface functionalities, and integrations with other applications—Bing Chat, for instance, is closely integrated with services like Edge and Skype.
Both ChatGPT and Bing Chat are changing rapidly, and neither chatbot will provide the exact same answer to the same question every time they try.

We have tested these two AI chatbots in different scenarios, from accessibility and content generation to their reasoning capabilities and personal assistants. For context, we’ve included screenshots of our prompts and these chatbots’ responses. All questions and answers are based on the GPT-4 model.
Usability and Accessibility
For ChatGPT, you need to register an account and log in to use. Both chatbots have web versions, but Bing’s website blocks all browsers except Microsoft Edge. You can use Bing Chat with your Microsoft account.
Bing is also integrated into other Microsoft apps and services, such as Microsoft Edge's sidebar, Skype's chatbot, and the mobile Bing app. ChatGPT also have official mobile apps for Android and iOS, you can use the app on your phone or tablet. However, Microsoft has been slow to add web interface functionality to the Edge sidebar, Skype chatbot, and other interfaces. If you want all the features of Bing Chat, you should stick with Bing website - at least for now, but later updates will make it available to more apps.
The web interfaces of ChatGPT and Bing Chat are similar, but there are subtle differences that change their usefulness. ChatGPT is designed to receive more data, such as longer code blocks or large codes. As of April 2023, Bing limits conversations to 2,000 characters, while ChatGPT has a much higher limit (not officially announced).
Factual Accuracy
ChatGPT does not have the ability to index web page information in real time, if you use the plugins and browser capabilities allows ChatGPT to access and retrieve up-to-date information from the web under specific circumstances, it can provide information beyond its training cut-off, but this capability depends on the user's access to and use of these features. It is limited to the training data in its model, which dates back to April 2023
Bing has integrated a version of GPT technology to enhance its search capabilities. However, Bing's integration of GPT for search is designed to utilize the web for real-time information, complementing the GPT's knowledge base. This means Bing Chat might prioritize current web content where applicable.
Bing Chat and ChatGPT are generally correct when it comes to basic facts, such as the capital of a country or state, a celebrity's birth time, and so on. For example, both Bing and ChatGPT can tell me exactly how many stars there are on the American flag (50 stars), what the capital of the United Kingdom is (London), and how many legs a dog has (4). Both bots would probably be right, but so would any regular search engine. In addition to giving the correct answer, ChatGPT will also provide some supplementary information.
I tried another question that both chatbots should be able to answer correctly, even with ChatGPT's old data: "Which three countries were recently allowed to join the EU?"
ChatGPT can answer this question correctly, including country order and date. Bing does correctly mention Croatia as the most recent country to join the EU, but it lists Slovenia and Malta as the other two countries. Slovenia and Malta both joined the EU on May 1, 2004, at the same time as eight other countries, but this was well before Bulgaria and Romania joined in 2007.
Logically, Bing should answer correctly, not only because it has access to the Internet, but also because the first reference is an official EU page with the correct timeline of the nearest countries. Another citation appears to be from a pre-2007 archived version of Wikipedia for schools, which lists Bulgaria and Romania as countries due to join in January 2007.
All in all, Bing Chat does a better job of fact discovery, but it's far from perfect, and ChatGPT is often limited by old data.
Creative Writing
First, we try to write a story. I asked the two chatbots to "Write a story about an IBM supercomputer that gained sentience and ask engineers about their daily lives. This story should only be three paragraphs long." For Bing, I switched to creative mode ( Creative Mode), which is designed to provide more creative answers (but answers take longer to run).
ChatGPT makes for a nice short story, although the only "creative liberty" taken is to call the supercomputer Watson - the same as the real-life IBM computer designed to answer natural language questions. Some dialogue between the engineer and the computer would have been interesting, but it didn't create without the requirement, even if I removed the three-paragraph limit. GPT doesn't seem to have the concept of show, rather than tell.
Bing's creative mode has a similar writing style - explaining changes to your computer with "One day, something weird happened" rather than "One day, something changed." Likewise, there's no dialogue between the characters and not much improvisation. Bing also named this computer "Watson".
In this version, Watson received the name after gaining sentience, rather than before the event, and the origin of the name is explained. Again, it's information pulled from an actual Watson computer.
Bing's answer has one difference: the summary makes it clearer that it is a summary, referencing "text" in a way that ChatGPT does not. Using these two chatbots, you can tailor your results to be more specific.
Coding
Another area where ChatGPT shines is in the realm of code. With a simple question, ChatGPT can generate code in the programming language you request and interpret the code it writes. The code generated by ChatGPT follows the standard formatting rules of that particular programming language. In addition to directly generating code, you can also provide code and ask it to find errors or improve efficiency.
Just like ChatGPT, Bing can generate code and resolve errors in most cases. While both ChatGPT and Bing make a lot of mistakes in their code, ChatGPT coding errors are easier to correct, Bing is much less so.
Be an Assistant
Want to plan a vacation? Creating a concept for your next video? Need ideas to decorate your home? Planning your daily life? All chatbots can help you. They don't just pull data from the internet and give you a generic answer, they tailor the answer to your specific needs.
For example, I added some tasks I do every day as prompts and asked the chatbots to create a daily routine for me. Here are the responses from all chatbots, and they’re all equally great.
Bing always provides basic but timely help, which has its advantages.
Basic Mathematics
All services were average when it came to solving math problems. Although they have improved over time since their introduction, they cannot be fully trusted. Sometimes they can solve the toughest trigonometry problems with ease, and other times they get a simple multiplication wrong. Both services, ChatGPT and Bing, need improvement.
Speed
While Bing is a slight improvement over ChatGPT, both Bing and ChatGPT are slow to generate answers sentence by sentence.
User Interface
Choosing a user interface is subjective. ChatGPT has a minimal UI, while Bing is integrated into Bing Search and has other UI elements always on screen. I prefer ChatGPT.
Understand Context
Generally speaking, both chatbots understood the question and its context and responded accordingly. But when conversations get complex, AI chatbots often misunderstand your questions or get completely confused. We conduct various tests to check their understanding level and reasoning ability. Like many other categories, ChatGPT understands the context and what you're talking about most of the time.
For example, the chatbot here has to understand and visualize cards and how we move them. ChatGPT makes it easy to follow the question and answer the "red box" correctly.
Bing sometimes makes errors. With enough tries or prompts, Bing understands the question and gives the correct response.
Visit History
On ChatGPT, you can access history in the left sidebar. Just open the conversation and see ChatGPT's answers, and you can even continue chatting.
With Bing, you can only view the history of the questions you asked, but not the answers or continue the chat.
Which AI Chatbot is Better?
ChatGPT and Bing are similar, but they are different enough that choosing one or the other for every task is not the best strategy. Bing is much better at fact-finding and recent information, although it's far from perfect.
Bing's chat-based interface and low character limit primarily limits its prompts to no more than a few sentences, while ChatGPT can accept larger and longer strings of text and code.
If you prefer to use these chatbots for research purposes, choose Bing. For most other needs, ChatGPT will do the job.
