Google Engineer Claims AI is Sentient: How that Happens?
AI Chatbots are becoming an important part of many industries worldwide, as they can easily replicate tasks way quicker than a normal human. The idea of an AI chatbot is that you give it any prompt, and it will use NLP (Natural Language Processing) to analyze your prompt and it will in turn, give the solution or answer to your prompt. Sentient AI robots being part of the future human race isn't a new concept, but it was considered way back in the 1950s with Isaac Asimov wrote his book, ‘I Robot’.
What are Sentient and AI?
Sentient refers to the capacity to have or sense common feelings, like happiness, sadness, enjoyment, pain, worry, etc. It is pretty much the same as consciousness, which is actually awareness at a much more advanced level. Much like sentience AI, it is what gives us living beings the ability to think, solve problems, and understand what is going on around us or in this world.
Artificial intelligence(AI), as we know it today, operates based on pre-programmed algorithms and machine learning. AI can be found in many forms like Speech recognition, language processing, chatbots, and even image generators. It can analyze data, learn from it, make decisions based on the analysis, and even improve over time through machine learning.
To better understand Artificial intelligence and how it achieves, you'd better learn more about some acronyms surrounding AI and their difference, like Natural Language Processing(NLP), Machine Learning(ML), Artificial Neural Networks(ANN), etc. The first thing to know is that NLP and machine learning are both subsets of AI.
NLP (Natural Language Processing) is a branch of AI and it refers to the AI’s ability to understand spoken sentences or text, pretty much in the same way a regular human being can. There is a good chance you have interacted with NLP’s in forms like any voice assistant, text to speech or even GPS systems, or even chatbots.
Machine learning is also a branch of AI and it refers to the use of algorithms and data so that the AI can learn like a human and get more accurate. AI gets smarter and smarter over time without human intervention. ANN is related to Machine learning as it allows the AI to learn as the human brain could.
Google Engineer Claims AI Chatbot LaMDA is Sentient
The impressive LaMDA, or "Language Model for Dialogue Applications," created by Google, represents a conversational Large Language Model (LLM). Its primary role is to provide the underlying technology necessary for dialogue-based applications to generate human-like language that sounds incredibly natural.
Blake Lemoine, Google engineer AI sentient, he was assigned to talk to LaMDA to ensure it did not use hate speech. Although he was done, he did not have the same expression as when he started. Blake claimed that Google sentient chatbot had sentience, and it was easily comparable to a 7 or 8-year-old child. Lemoine wrote, “I haven't had the opportunity to run experiments with Bing's chatbot yet, but based on the various things that I've seen online, it looks like it might be sentient."
Lemoine also added "I ran some experiments to see whether the Google AI sentient was simply saying it felt anxious or whether it behaved in anxious ways in those situations. I believe the kinds of AI that are currently being developed are the most powerful technology that has been invented since the atomic bomb."
It is not easy defining sentience and most people still agree that AI has not reached that stage yet. There is something else we shall keep in mind, the question isn’t if LaMDA is actually sentient, but what can it do if it fools others into thinking it is?
What happens if AI becomes sentient?
The notion that AI could achieve sentience presents profound implications and challenges. If AI were to attain sentience, it would possess subjective experience, consciousness, and self-awareness akin to human intelligence. The ramifications of sentient AI would result in significant societal, ethical, and philosophical consequences. Although the realization of sentient AI is currently hypothetical and speculative in nature, taking a thoughtful approach to its development is imperative.
Examining the ethical aspects, regulations, and guidelines surrounding the emergence of sentient Al will not only ensure responsible usage but also help address concerns regarding autonomy, decision-making, and potential societal impact. The field of AIs research and its ethical considerations will occupy a pivotal role and play a vital role in shaping the future of sentient AI, striving to balance between technological advancement and the preservation of human values ethics, and overall well-being.
What is the current state of AI chatbot in 2023?
The chances of AI ever being sentient is an ongoing debate, with many experts arguing that AI can not and will not become conscious, but many others argue that the possibility will rise if more AIs are made with the human brain in mind. However, with no doubt that AI is becoming an important part of our work. AI chatbots have revolutionized many industries as of 2023, including customer service, e-commerce, healthcare, retail, and more, that is how its worth has grown up to $137.6 million in 2023, and it is predicted that by 2025, it will rise up to $239.2 million.
These days chatbots are able to finish at least 70% of human conversations. They have significantly advanced, going beyond direct rule-based interactions to complex conversations driven by cutting-edge conversational AI technologies like NLP, NLU, and NLG. These chatbots are able to comprehend context, determine user intent, recall prior discussions, and offer tailored responses. Additionally, they have acquired multiple languages, allowing enterprises to expand internationally. The development of chatbots that can learn from their interactions and continuously improve their effectiveness over time has also been facilitated by advances in machine learning.
A noteworthy trend has been the simultaneous fusion of AI chatbots with other cutting-edge technology. For instance, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) combined with AI chatbots are improving consumer experience, especially in retail and real estate. Voice-activated assistants and smart home gadgets have also boosted their use of AI chatbots, making daily activities more convenient. Companies have made significant investments in encryption and other safeguards to secure user data because privacy and security have been top priorities. We may anticipate that as AI develops further, chatbots will increase in intelligence, flexibility, and security.
