Children's Devices Averaged 4+ Hours of Daily App Use in June, AirDroid Global Data Shows
Aggregated usage trends from AirDroid Parental Control point to longer sessions and later activity as families prepare to reset digital routines for the new school year.
Average daily app usage on devices managed through AirDroid Parental Control surpassed four hours per day in June, reaching 257.5 minutes, compared with 236.5 minutes in May. The month-over-month increase coincided with the beginning of summer break in many Northern Hemisphere markets, although school calendars vary by region and the data do not establish a causal relationship.
Key Findings from June Data
| Trend | What the Data Shows |
|---|---|
| Overall usage up | 257.5 min/day in June (+21 min from May) |
| Peak hours | 8 PM – 9 PM; over 25% of daily usage occurred between 6 PM – 10 PM |
| Late-night activity | Nine in ten analyzed devices recorded at least one instance of app activity between 10 PM and 6 AM during June, although this does not indicate that late-night use occurred every night |
| Weekend spike | 263 min weekends vs. 255.5 min weekdays |
| Family safety tools engaged | Family-configured screen-time, content-safety, and device-management settings triggered nearly 40 million automated alerts and notifications during June. These alerts do not necessarily represent 40 million separate safety incidents. |
Where Devices Spent Their Screen Time
YouTube led in total time, averaging 72 minutes per active user per day across analyzed devices. TikTok had the highest per-user engagement at 94 minutes daily.
Messaging and social activity also changed during the month. Time spent on WhatsApp increased by 19%, while Instagram usage increased by 15% compared with May.
New app installations reflected changing digital interests as well. Instagram was the most newly installed app in June, while ChatGPT ranked third among newly installed apps, ahead of Roblox, Snapchat, and major mobile gaming apps included in the analysis, indicating growing interest in AI chat tools among users of the analyzed devices.
What This Means for the Back-to-School Transition
"Summer naturally brings more flexibility, but our data shows that digital routines can quickly shift toward longer sessions and later usage. The goal is not to eliminate screen time, but to help families create healthier routines before the school year begins through gradual and predictable adjustments."
— Bailey Morgan, Head of Family Digital Safety Content at AirDroid
The transition from summer's unstructured schedule to the school year's early mornings and homework demands can be challenging for families whose digital habits have drifted. AirDroid's data suggests that the weeks before school starts are an ideal window to reset boundaries.

Three Steps Families Can Take
- Adjust bedtime device rules gradually — Rather than abrupt bans, shift late-night usage earlier by 15–30 minutes every few days.
- Review app priorities together — Use AirDroid's usage reports to start a conversation about which apps add value and which may be consuming excessive time.
- Reactivate school-year schedules early — Set screen time limits and downtime windows a week or two before school starts to allow adjustment time.
About the Data
The findings are based on aggregated and anonymized app usage trends from hundreds of thousands of devices using AirDroid Parental Control globally. Data from different markets and supported mobile operating systems were pooled for the analysis and were not segmented by country, region, or operating system.
Usage patterns were measured according to each device's local date and time. May and June trends were compared on a month-over-month basis. Because school calendars, seasonal patterns, device usage, and platform capabilities vary across markets and operating systems, the findings should be interpreted as overall trends among devices using AirDroid Parental Control rather than as representative of all children or any individual country.
No names, messages, photos, contacts, or other personally identifiable information were included in the analysis. No individual user or device activity was identified or reported.
